Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister has disclosed that several Foreign Ministers and Heads of State within the Economic Community of West African States have formally requested Ghana’s traditional fugu smock designed in their respective national colours, signalling growing regional admiration for Ghanaian culture.
According to the minister, the interest follows recent high-profile appearances by Ghanaian leaders in fugu at official engagements, sparking conversations among ECOWAS counterparts about adopting the iconic attire for ceremonial and diplomatic events. What began as casual admiration has now evolved into direct requests, with some leaders already exploring bespoke designs that blend Ghana’s craftsmanship with their own national identities.
The minister described the development as a boost for Ghana’s cultural diplomacy, noting that it opens new avenues for promoting local textile production beyond Ghana’s borders. He added that the rising demand could translate into increased orders for weavers in northern Ghana, where fugu originates, creating jobs and strengthening livelihoods while positioning traditional attire as a viable export product.
