The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has apprehended a 32-year-old Nigerian national, Yusif Dahiru, for allegedly carrying out illegal waste collection activities and extorting money from the public at an unauthorised dumping site near UTC in Accra.
Confirming the development in a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 15, the AMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, stated that the suspect was arrested around 3:00 a.m. on Monday, April 13, after authorities received a tip-off.
He explained that Dahiru had stationed himself at the location, collecting refuse from residents while posing as an authorised official assigned to oversee waste disposal there. However, he stressed that the Assembly had not granted him any permission to operate at the site.
Mr Ankrah further indicated that the suspect was allegedly charging individuals for waste disposal services under the false claim that he was working under a supervisor.
Although Dahiru denied being an official waste collector during questioning, he admitted to helping transport refuse to the site in return for payment.
The AMA says investigations into the incident are ongoing.
