A 26-year-old man is before court after allegedly driving off in a Ghana Police Service armoured vehicle he found parked with its engine running outside a market in Nkawie, Ashanti Region.
Ebenezer Frimpong made his first court appearance following his arrest on April 15, 2026, facing a provisional charge of theft.
The vehicle’s driver, Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi of the Formed Police Unit, had briefly stepped away to visit a nearby pharmacy while transporting the armoured vehicle, registration GP 1131, from Nkawie to the Regional Police Workshop in Kumasi for servicing. Frimpong, who was passing by, spotted the unattended running vehicle, jumped in, and sped off, leaving bystanders and the officer stunned.
A seven-man SWAT patrol team launched an immediate pursuit along the Abuakwa-Kumasi stretch, eventually apprehending Frimpong at Atwima Mim.
The armoured vehicle has been retained as an exhibit. Frimpong was subsequently transferred to the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department for further investigations and remains in custody at the Abuakwa District Police Command.
