The government on Thursday, April 16, 2026, inspected 100 newly acquired Isuzu buses imported from Egypt as part of efforts to address transportation challenges in the country.
The buses are expected to be handed over to Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) to strengthen its fleet and improve service reliability.
A government delegation led by Deputy Transport Minister Dorcas Affo-Toffey carried out the inspection on behalf of the Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, who has assigned her oversight responsibility for MMTL to enhance its efficiency on behalf of President John Mahama and the government.
She was joined by MMTL Managing Director Kale Cesar Esq., his deputy in charge of operations and technical, Haroun Apaw-Wiredu, along with officials from MMTL and the Ministry of Transport.

The 29-seater buses form part of a larger consignment of 300 vehicles intended to expand capacity, ease congestion, and improve the reliability of public transport services.
This intervention comes at a time when the sector is under strain, with commuters experiencing long queues, rising fares, and frequent breakdowns of existing buses. It also aligns with the government’s broader transport sector reform agenda.
The full batch of 300 buses will be delivered in phases of 100, with the remaining units expected to arrive by August 2026.
Speaking during the engagement with MAC Ghana and the Egyptian suppliers, Madam Affo-Toffey expressed appreciation to Ghanaians for their patience amid the transport difficulties. She also acknowledged the support of the Transport Minister and President John Mahama for prioritising the retooling of MMTL.
She noted that although some initially doubted the initiative, the arrival of the buses demonstrates the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises, particularly those outlined in the State of the Nation Address.
According to her, while the deployment of the buses may not completely resolve the challenges, it will significantly reduce congestion and improve commuting conditions.
She assured that the 100 buses will soon be distributed across various routes to ease pressure on the transport system.
The Deputy Minister also commended MAC Ghana for ensuring timely delivery, noting that the company honoured its commitment despite initial concerns about meeting deadlines.
