Eight individuals have been arrested by police for allegedly impersonating national security operatives and robbing illegal miners of gold, cash, and mobile phones at Assin Awisam in the Central Region.
The suspects are said to have carried out the operation in the Assin North area, where they allegedly stormed illegal mining sites posing as national security personnel. They reportedly used the guise to gain access to the miners before carrying out the robbery.
According to preliminary police information, the group is believed to have targeted miners engaged in illegal activities, seizing gold and other valuables during the operation. Cash and mobile phones were also allegedly taken from victims at the site.
The arrests were made following police intelligence operations after complaints and reports linked the group to a series of similar incidents in the area. The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Authorities say further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of their operations and whether more individuals are involved.
The incident adds to growing concerns about the activities of individuals impersonating security officials to carry out criminal acts, particularly in mining communities across the country.
