Ghana has been confirmed as host of the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, following an official announcement by Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association.
The decision brings the continental youth tournament back to Ghana for the first time in nearly three decades, positioning the country once again at the centre of African youth football development.
The U-20 AFCON, organised by the Confederation of African Football, is a key competition on the continent’s football calendar and serves as a qualification pathway to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Officials say the hosting rights reflect confidence in Ghana’s capacity to organise major football tournaments, building on its experience with previous continental competitions.
The announcement is expected to trigger preparations around infrastructure, including stadium upgrades, training facilities, and logistics planning ahead of the tournament.
Ghana has a strong history at youth level, having won the U-20 AFCON multiple times and famously lifting the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009, the first African nation to do so.
The tournament is also expected to deliver economic and sporting benefits, with increased tourism, business activity, and international exposure anticipated in the lead-up to 2027.
With the hosting now confirmed, attention is expected to shift to readiness planning and the development of Ghana’s next generation of football talent ahead of the competition.
