An elderly Ghanaian woman and her family were left devastated after erratic power outages reportedly triggered a fire that destroyed parts of her home, thousands of cedis stored in the house, and other valuables.
In a video circulating on X, the footage captures extensive destruction inside the residence, including burnt furniture, scattered belongings, and the loss of thousands of cedis in cash and valuables. The incident has renewed public concern about the safety risks associated with unstable electricity supply, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”
The fire comes against the backdrop of ongoing power interruptions affecting parts of the country, which have reportedly worsened following a substation fire at Akosombo on April 23. The incident led to scheduled and intermittent outages in several regions, including Greater Accra and Ashanti.
Authorities have attributed the disruptions to maintenance challenges within the power distribution system and have assured the public that measures are being implemented to restore stability and prevent further incidents.
However, opposition figures argue that the situation reflects deeper structural issues in the energy sector, pointing to what they describe as long-standing neglect and poor planning.
Meanwhile, households and businesses continue to express concern over rising operational costs and the risk of electrical surges, with many calling for urgent and lasting solutions to the recurring power instability.
