President John Dramani Mahama has said the recent fire at the Akosombo power enclave offers an opportunity to modernise key infrastructure, after the incident led to renewed power outages across the country.
He made the remarks on Thursday, April 30, during a visit to Akosombo Dam to evaluate the impact of the fire, which affected a substation operated by Ghana Grid Company.
The blaze damaged vital equipment, resulting in the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts from the national grid and causing intermittent electricity supply in several areas.
Speaking to engineers and officials, President Mahama said the disruption should be seen as a chance to rebuild with improved systems. He noted that the situation creates room to install a more advanced control room that will enhance operations at the plant for years to come.
He also praised technical teams for their quick response in restoring power, highlighting the progress made so far in stabilising generation. He pointed out that four turbines are already back in operation and expressed optimism that the remaining two would soon be restored.
The President reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting key energy institutions, describing both Ghana Grid Company and Volta River Authority as central to the country’s power sector.
Meanwhile, Energy Minister John Jinapor confirmed that four generating units at the dam have been successfully restored, with the remaining units expected to return to service within the week.
