The government has paid GH¢6.1 million into the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, through salary deductions made from President John Dramani Mahama and his political appointees.
The Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, disclosed in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 7, 2026, that the Controller and Accountant-General had officially confirmed the transfer of the funds.
According to him, the deductions were carried out in accordance with directives issued by President Mahama during the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund last year.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu explained that President Mahama had pledged to donate six months of his salary to support the initiative and later encouraged all political appointees to contribute one month of their salaries as well.
He further stated that appointees who failed to comply with the President’s deadline for declaring their assets were instructed to forfeit three months of their salaries to the Fund.
The minister noted that preparations are ongoing to transfer the final portion of the contributions, which will include deductions from officials who defaulted on the asset declaration requirement.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was established to help finance healthcare services and support vulnerable individuals in accessing medical treatment.
