The Ghana Statistical Service’s latest Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report has ranked a number of districts in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions among the best-performing areas in the country from 2021 to 2025, citing steady progress in living standards, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.
The report identified Ablekuma North Municipal as Ghana’s top-performing district, with an average poverty headcount of 8.5 percent during the five-year period. The district also maintained a consistent presence in the top ten rankings each year.
Ablekuma West Municipal placed second with an average multidimensional poverty rate of 8.6 percent, followed by Korle Klottey Municipal at 8.8 percent. La Dade-Kotopon Municipal and Tema West Municipal also secured places among the country’s leading districts, underscoring the strong performance of urban municipalities in tackling multidimensional poverty.
Other districts that performed strongly include Ayawaso Central Municipal, Ayawaso West Municipal, Krowor Municipal, Ledzokuku Municipal, and Asokwa Municipal in the Ashanti Region.
The findings highlighted the wide disparity between urban and rural poverty levels in Ghana. While many municipalities within Greater Accra continued to post relatively low poverty rates, districts in northern Ghana recorded significantly higher levels of deprivation.
The report further indicated that Ayawaso North Municipal registered the lowest multidimensional poverty rate in the country in 2025, standing at 5.5 percent.
Officials from the Ghana Statistical Service explained that the rankings would serve as an important tool for policy formulation, targeted investments, and social intervention programmes aimed at reducing poverty nationwide.
According to the report, better access to education, healthcare, sanitation, electricity, and employment opportunities played a major role in the strong performance of the highest-ranked districts.
