An Accra Circuit Court has ordered that two suspected armed robbers remain in police custody after they were arraigned over an alleged attack on a mobile phone shop.
The accused, 24-year-old painter Jacob Akugri and 28-year-old driver Moses Akungoe, have pleaded not guilty to claims that they conspired to rob a phone shop in Bolgatanga at gunpoint, stealing an unspecified number of mobile phones and cash.
They are expected to reappear before Circuit Court One on May 28, 2026.
According to Detective Chief Inspector Frederick Asare, the arrests form part of a police operation aimed at addressing a rise in highway robberies along the Bolgatanga–Walewale–Tamale corridor.
He told the court that the Director-General of the CID deployed a special operations team to carry out surveillance and gather intelligence on suspected criminals targeting commuters along the route.
Following a month-long surveillance operation, investigators reportedly obtained credible information identifying the accused persons.
Akugri, also known as “Weezy,” and Akungoe, popularly called “Mosbee,” both residents of Walewale in the North East Region, are alleged to be members of a gang responsible for multiple armed robbery incidents in the North East and Upper East Regions.
The court was informed that on May 9, 2026, security officers tracked the suspects from Walewale to Kumasi, where they were arrested at separate locations.
During interrogation, the accused persons allegedly admitted involvement in several highway robberies in their caution statements.
Preliminary investigations also identified other accomplices, including alleged gang leaders who are still at large and believed to be hiding in Walewale.
Police further linked the suspects and their associates to a robbery attack on a mobile phone shop along Dakio Road in Bolgatanga, where victims were held at gunpoint and robbed of mobile phones and cash.
Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects, recover weapons used in the crimes, and trace those who may be purchasing or benefiting from the stolen items.
