President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major secondary education improvement initiative supported by a $300 million World Bank facility to enhance the quality of senior high schools nationwide.
Speaking during an inspection of STEM education activities at Sawla Primary School, the President said the programme is intended to improve standards in selected senior high schools and reduce disparities in educational quality across the country.
According to him, the initiative forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen secondary education and improve learning outcomes.
Mr. Mahama explained that under the programme, 30 Category C senior high schools will receive investments to upgrade them to Category B status, while another 30 Category B schools will be improved to reach Category A level.
He said the intervention is aimed at ending the long-standing perception that some schools offer lower-quality education, which often causes parents and students to reject placements to those institutions.
“So that this annual ritual where people don’t want to be posted to some schools because they think they are Category C will be a thing of the past,” he stated.
The President noted that the reforms are expected to promote a fairer distribution of educational resources and improve teaching and learning standards throughout the secondary school system.
He further disclosed that the programme is being financed through a $300 million World Bank package, equivalent to nearly GH¢3.5 billion, which will support infrastructure development and quality enhancement in the selected schools.
