The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has urged the Greater Accra Regional Minister to take swift action to shut down or relocate the livestock market operating at Kanda near the National Mosque, over concerns about sanitation and the growing disorder in the capital city.
The Committee said the increasing sale of cattle, goats, and other animals in the area is undermining Accra’s image and disrupting efforts aimed at proper urban planning and environmental management.
Speaking in an interview, the Vice Chairman of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Opoku Ansah, described the situation as worrying and stressed the need for urgent intervention.
According to him, the area has gradually transformed into a major livestock trading centre. He noted that during a recent visit, he observed camels being sold there in addition to cows and goats.
He argued that the development is inappropriate for a prime area within the capital, especially after significant investments have been made over the years to improve and beautify Accra.
Mr. Opoku Ansah explained that the business started on a small scale with only a few animals but has expanded rapidly, with more than 100 cattle now reportedly occupying the area alongside goats and camels.
The Committee is therefore appealing to the Greater Accra Regional Minister to urgently intervene by relocating or dissolving the market to preserve the city’s sanitation, environment, and planned urban structure.
