Former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi has expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to exceed expectations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite growing concerns over the team’s recent form.
With Ghana heading into the tournament on the back of five straight defeats and difficult group stage opponents, many supporters have questioned the national team’s chances of progressing beyond the opening round.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team.
Ghana also faces additional pressure after failing to move past the group stage in each of their last three appearances at major international tournaments.
However, Nyantakyi believes the current mood surrounding the team could work in their favour.
“As I told somebody yesterday, never write off any Ghana team,” he said.
“The time that you have little faith in them is when they spring surprises. Let us rally behind them, and I think they can do well.”
Nyantakyi was in charge of the Ghana Football Association during some of the most successful periods in the country’s football history, including the Black Stars’ run to the Round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and the quarter-finals at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Preparations for the 2026 tournament are already underway, with the Black Stars currently in camp ahead of an international friendly against Wales national football team in Cardiff on June 2.
A provisional squad of 28 players has reported to camp, although the number is expected to be reduced to 26 before the final list for the World Cup is confirmed.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz has maintained that places in the squad will be based strictly on merit, insisting only players who prove they deserve selection will make the final team for the expanded 48-nation tournament.
