Efforts to reposition the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 general election received renewed attention this week as former National Chairman Awentami Paul Afoko urged party members to prioritise reconciliation and grassroots mobilisation over lingering internal disputes.
Addressing party stakeholders during a series of engagements across the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo and Western North regions, Mr Afoko argued that the NPP’s ability to regain political momentum would depend on whether members could rally around a shared vision rather than remain divided by past disagreements.
His message comes at a time when discussions within the party have increasingly focused on rebuilding structures and strengthening support at the grassroots following the 2024 election cycle.
According to Mr Afoko, members must resist the temptation to dwell on old conflicts and instead direct their attention to the work required to return the party to government.
“We must build bridges to the future, not the past,” Afoko told the gatherings. “If we keep looking backwards, we will miss the opportunities in front of us. The youth in this party, and a great number of us, don’t want stories about who offended whom in the past or during 2024. They want the party they believed in back to power. Focus on unity and grassroots organising,” he urged.
Throughout the consultations, discussions centred on strengthening local party structures and encouraging broader participation among younger members, whom Mr Afoko described as critical to the party’s future electoral fortunes.
The former chairman used the engagements to promote his “3R” vision — Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture — which he believes can help restore cohesion within the NPP and provide a foundation for future success.
“For years I chose to work quietly behind the scenes, supporting the NPP in private,” Afoko said. “But recent developments have compelled me to step forward. We need to get our party back into winning ways, and that starts with unity of purpose.”
While acknowledging challenges facing the party, he maintained that the NPP still possesses the capacity to regroup and compete strongly in the next election if members remain focused on common objectives.
Mr Afoko also expressed confidence that party supporters would ultimately unite behind efforts to secure victory in 2028 and help make Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Ghana’s next President.
“The future will not wait for us to finish fighting the past,” he said. “Let’s build the bridges now.”
The nationwide consultations form part of a broader outreach effort by the former chairman aimed at reconnecting with party members and promoting a message of unity as the NPP begins laying the groundwork for its next electoral campaign.
