President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the government intends to purchase match tickets for Ghanaians living abroad who want to cheer on the national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Addressing a diaspora town hall meeting on Sunday, May 31, President Mahama said the move is aimed at helping Ghanaian communities in the various host cities attend matches and support the Black Stars during the tournament.
He noted, however, that the government would not be able to fully fund large groups of supporters travelling from Ghana due to the need for careful management of the country’s finances.
According to the President, the 2026 World Cup, which will be staged across three countries, comes with major logistical and financial demands, making the usual practice of sponsoring fans from Ghana difficult to sustain.
He explained that paying for airfare, accommodation, meals and match tickets for supporters travelling from Ghana would place a heavy strain on the national budget.
President Mahama estimated that sponsoring one supporter for the entire competition could cost close to $11,000, making mass sponsorship unrealistic under the current economic circumstances.
Instead, he said the government would prioritise supporting Ghanaians in the diaspora by providing match tickets to enable them to attend games in large numbers and rally behind the Black Stars without bearing the full cost of participation.
