The Accra High Court has ordered the detention of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC), after ruling that he failed to comply with a key bail condition requiring him to surrender his passport.
The decision was taken on Thursday, June 4, 2026, after the court rejected an application seeking to change the bail terms. Presiding judge Justice Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit described the failure to deposit the passport as disregard for a lawful court order and directed that he remain in police custody until compliance.
Abronye’s legal team argued that the passport was with the UK High Commission and that he needed it for travel related to studies and health. The court, however, maintained that the bail conditions were clear and binding, stressing that any travel request should have been formally made through the court.
Prosecutors countered that the passport was still under the accused’s control at the time bail was granted and should have been deposited at the court registry as required.
The case stems from charges of publication of false news and offensive conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, linked to comments allegedly made about a Circuit Court judge.
He remains in custody pending compliance with the bail order.
