About 140 police personnel and their families have been left displaced after a fire destroyed residential quarters at the Accra Central Police Station in Tudu.
The affected accommodation, which housed 42 officers, was extensively damaged in the blaze that broke out on Wednesday night.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak says government has begun urgent steps to provide temporary shelter for those affected, while plans are also underway to rebuild the facility.
He said no lives were lost in the incident, describing it as a relief despite the scale of property damage.
“We cannot wait. From today, all affected persons must be moved to temporary accommodation, even if it is a hotel,” he stated during a visit to the scene.
He added that arrangements are being made in collaboration with the Inspector General of Police and other agencies to secure immediate housing support, followed by longer-term rental solutions.
The minister also conveyed President John Dramani Mahama’s sympathy to the affected officers, noting that the Vice President had been briefed and would visit upon her return.
Government says investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, while emergency support remains the immediate priority for displaced families.
