Families displaced by the recent fire at the Police Barracks in Accra Central are expected to receive temporary accommodation and emergency assistance as the government begins relief efforts.
The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, visited the affected barracks on Thursday to assess the destruction caused by the blaze and interact with residents whose homes and belongings were affected.
During the visit, the minister assured victims that immediate measures were being taken to address their welfare needs while authorities work towards rebuilding the damaged structures.
He indicated that government, in collaboration with relevant agencies, is making arrangements to relocate affected families to temporary housing facilities to ensure they have safe shelter in the aftermath of the disaster.
Beyond accommodation, the displaced households are also expected to receive financial support and essential items to help them recover from the losses suffered during the fire.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has been tasked with providing relief supplies as part of ongoing efforts to support the affected residents.
Mr Mohammed-Mubarak commended emergency responders for their swift action in containing the fire, noting that the coordinated response helped prevent a more severe outcome.
He specifically praised personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Police Service for their efforts during the emergency and acknowledged the role of police leadership in managing the situation.
The minister further assured residents that investigations are underway to determine the circumstances that led to the outbreak and to recommend measures aimed at preventing similar incidents in future.
As part of his engagements, Mr Mohammed-Mubarak also visited the Police Hospital, where an officer injured during the incident is receiving medical treatment.
He encouraged the officer to remain focused on recovery and assured him of government support throughout the healing process.
The fire, which affected sections of the police residential facility opposite the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters, left several families displaced and destroyed personal property, prompting calls for urgent intervention and support for victims.
