Billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is set to appear before a congressional committee in Washington on Wednesday to answer questions about his past association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The hearing follows the release of millions of pages of documents connected to investigations into Epstein, in which Gates’s name reportedly appeared numerous times. Gates has consistently denied any wrongdoing and maintains that he was unaware of Epstein’s criminal activities.
Lawmakers are expected to focus on why Gates maintained contact with Epstein after the financier’s 2008 conviction for sex-related offences became public. Gates has previously said their interactions were linked to discussions about philanthropy and potential support for global health initiatives, although no partnership was ultimately established.
Committee members are also expected to examine whether Gates adequately investigated Epstein’s background before engaging with him. Gates has acknowledged exercising poor judgment in meeting Epstein and has publicly expressed regret over the relationship.
Another key area of inquiry will be whether Epstein attempted to use his connections with influential figures, including Gates, to enhance his status or shield himself from scrutiny. Lawmakers have indicated they want to understand the nature of Epstein’s relationships with prominent individuals and whether any attempts were made to exert influence.
Gates has agreed to cooperate voluntarily with the inquiry and has said he welcomes the opportunity to answer questions about the matter.
Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. His longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in recruiting and grooming underage girls for abuse.
The committee is expected to use the interview to gather further information about Epstein’s network of associates and the extent of his connections with influential figures.
