South African television personality and musician Molemo Maarohanye, popularly known as Jub Jub, has been taken into police custody following allegations that he abducted a taxi driver during a confrontation linked to a personal relationship dispute.
Police say the incident occurred in Edenvale, east of Johannesburg, after the presenter allegedly accused the driver of being romantically involved with his girlfriend.
According to investigators, the confrontation escalated when the television host allegedly compelled the man into his vehicle before a firearm was discharged during the encounter. Authorities say the alleged victim was not injured and managed to escape before reporting the matter to a nearby police station.
The complaint has led to the arrest of the media personality, who is expected to make his first appearance before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court to answer to the allegations.
Law enforcement officials say preliminary investigations indicate that the incident took place shortly after the taxi driver had completed a passenger trip early on Sunday morning. The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation, and police have not disclosed whether additional charges could be filed.
Maarohanye has not publicly responded to the allegations.
The latest arrest places the entertainer back in the spotlight for legal reasons, years after a high-profile court case that significantly impacted his public image. In 2012, he was convicted in connection with a fatal drag-racing incident that claimed the lives of four schoolchildren and injured two others. However, the convictions were later amended by a higher court, which found him guilty of culpable homicide rather than murder.
He also faced serious criminal allegations in 2023 after an ex-partner accused him of rape, assault and attempted murder. Prosecutors eventually dropped the case, citing insufficient prospects of securing a conviction.
Despite his legal controversies, Jub Jub remains one of South Africa’s most recognisable television figures. He currently hosts the popular reality programme Uyajola 9/9, a show centred on exposing infidelity in relationships.
The latest allegations have generated widespread attention across South Africa, with many awaiting further details as the case moves through the judicial process. Police say investigations are ongoing and have urged the public to allow the legal process to take its course.
