The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has engaged the Chinese developers of the controversial China Mall project in Koforidua, along with their local representatives, as authorities step up efforts to address concerns surrounding the development.
The meeting follows increasing public attention on the project amid allegations that the developers failed to comply with directives issued by the Regional Security Council.
The China Mall development has become the subject of intense debate in the Eastern Region, with local traders, residents, and other stakeholders raising concerns about its operations and whether it is meeting the required regulatory standards.
In response to these concerns, REGSEC initiated measures to evaluate the project’s compliance with established regulations and official directives.
As part of its enforcement actions, the Council ordered a temporary suspension of construction activities and issued a stop-work directive to the developers.
However, security officials later reported that work was still ongoing at the site despite the order, escalating tensions between the project developers and regulatory authorities.
Following these developments, National Security personnel conducted an operation at the construction site, which had been designated a restricted area pending further instructions from authorities.
During the exercise, six workers were arrested for allegedly continuing construction activities in violation of the stop-work order and security restrictions imposed on the site.
