Young patients receiving treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital are benefiting from a donation exercise launched by the National Blood Service Ghana as part of efforts to extend this year’s World Blood Donor Day activities beyond blood collection campaigns.
The Service has presented 1,000 pieces of children’s clothing to the hospital’s Child Health Department, describing the initiative as a practical way of supporting the wellbeing of children undergoing medical care.
Officials said the donation was made possible through assistance from the Global Blood Fund and forms part of a broader effort to combine healthcare support with public awareness activities surrounding blood donation.
Chief Executive Officer of the National Blood Service, Dr Shirley Phyllis Ohenewa Owusu-Ofori, said the organisation believes healthcare extends beyond the provision of blood and medical treatment to include measures that improve the comfort of patients, particularly children.
She noted that many young patients spend extended periods in hospital and require both medical attention and social support during recovery.
The donation was received by staff of the Child Health Department, who welcomed the gesture and its contribution to patient care.
The presentation comes as the National Blood Service continues a month-long programme to celebrate voluntary blood donors across the country. The campaign is aimed at recognising individuals whose donations help sustain healthcare services and save lives in hospitals nationwide.
Health officials say such partnerships demonstrate how blood donation campaigns can also serve as opportunities to mobilise additional support for vulnerable patients and strengthen community involvement in healthcare delivery.
