The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has named Ernest Ofori Sarpong, Chief Executive Officer of the Special Group of Companies, as its inaugural Chancellor.
The appointment, which takes effect on August 1, 2026, was approved by the University’s Governing Council during its meeting on May 26, 2026, in line with the provisions of the UniMAC Statutes.
As Chancellor, Mr Ofori Sarpong will serve as the university’s ceremonial head, offering strategic leadership, advancing the institution’s vision and interests, and conferring degrees and other academic honours on behalf of UniMAC.
The university said his appointment reflects his outstanding leadership, extensive professional experience, and longstanding contributions to business, education, youth empowerment, and community development.
A prominent Ghanaian entrepreneur, Mr Ofori Sarpong is the founder and CEO of the Special Group of Companies, a diversified conglomerate with interests in manufacturing, construction, real estate, and strategic investments.
He also has affiliations with several notable enterprises, including United Television (UTV), Best Point Savings and Loans Limited, and U2 Salt Limited.
A Chartered Accountant by profession, he holds a Master of Science degree in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration degree at École Supérieure de Gestion (ESG) in France.
Over the years, he has received numerous local and international honours, including the Global Dignity Award for Service to Humanity, presented at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and the Millennium Excellence Award for Business Entrepreneur of the Year in 2025.
Beyond his business achievements, Mr Ofori Sarpong has held several leadership positions, including Chairman of the Governing Council of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), Chairman of the EMY Africa Awards, and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana.
UniMAC expressed optimism that his appointment would deepen collaboration between academia and industry, strengthen strategic partnerships, and elevate the institution’s profile both locally and internationally.
Established under the University of Media, Arts and Communication Act, 2020 (Act 1059), UniMAC was formed through the merger of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL), and the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI). The university specialises in higher education, research and professional training in media, communication, journalism, languages, film, television, public relations, advertising, and related fields.
