The Eastern South Regional Police Command, working together with the National Operations Directorate, has arrested 258 people over the violent unrest that erupted in Nsawam–Adoagyiri on July 7.
Police believe the incident was a resurgence of clashes involving rival youth groups, following similar disturbances recorded in the area last year.
Preliminary investigations indicate that some of those involved allegedly looted shops, set an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) transformer ablaze, vandalised the Oko Anadwo Palace and a community astroturf, and robbed mobile money operators, creating widespread fear among residents.
In a statement, the Eastern South Regional Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent David Fianko-Okyere, said the arrests resulted from an intelligence-led security operation.
He disclosed that officers recovered two locally manufactured firearms, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, suspected tramadol and Viagra tablets, as well as several mobile phones believed to be linked to the ongoing investigations.
According to the police, all 258 suspects remain in custody and are assisting with investigations.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command assured the public that security has been reinforced in the municipality to safeguard lives and property.
It also appealed to residents to assist the investigation by providing any relevant information to the nearest police station.
The Command further urged the public, especially young people, to obey the law and avoid activities that could undermine peace, security and public order.
