Police in the Volta Region have launched investigations into the suspected abduction of an eight-month-old baby boy who went missing at the Kpando Market.
The incident is reported to have occurred between 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, after a woman allegedly approached a young groundnut seller carrying her baby on her back and requested to buy four large tins of groundnuts.
According to reports, the suspect, described as a fair-complexioned woman believed to be in her mid-thirties, was dressed in an orange top and black trousers.
She allegedly offered to carry the baby while the mother attended to her purchase.
The mother said she served three tins of groundnuts before realising she needed more stock to complete the order. She briefly left to collect the additional groundnuts, but when she returned, both the woman and her baby had disappeared.
With the help of relatives and other traders, the mother searched the market for the child, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
The incident was subsequently reported to the Kpando District Police Station, where investigations are ongoing.
Police sources also indicated that the same woman may have approached another trader earlier that day using a similar tactic but failed.
The trader reportedly told investigators that the suspect had asked to hold her child while she withdrew money on the trader’s behalf. However, the trader declined the request and instead directed the woman to nearby Mobile Money operators.
The police have appealed to the public to provide any information that could help identify the suspect or locate the missing child by contacting the nearest police station or the Kpando District Police Station.
