Ghana Navy intercepts canoe carrying 59 sacks of suspected marijuana
The Ghana Navy has seized a canoe loaded with 59 sacks of suspected marijuana during an intelligence-led anti-drug operation at the Ada estuary.
In a statement, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) said personnel from the Navy’s Riverine Command carried out the operation at about 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026, after detecting a canoe attempting to move from the estuary into the open sea.
The occupants reportedly abandoned the canoe and escaped by swimming away when they noticed the approaching naval team.
A search of the vessel led to the recovery of 59 sacks of suspected marijuana, 24 containers of 25-litre fuel, two 40-horsepower outboard motors, a Tecno mobile phone, and a Voter’s ID card.
The confiscated items have since been handed over to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) to support ongoing investigations.
The Ghana Armed Forces said efforts are continuing to identify and arrest the individuals who fled during the operation.
The Ghana Navy reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime domain and preventing criminal groups from using Ghana’s waterways and coastal areas for illegal activities.
