NPP Ashanti clears 34 aspirants for regional polls

Preparations are underway for the New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Executive elections, with dozens of party members set to compete for key leadership positions in what is expected to be a closely watched internal contest.

The elections will take place at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on August 16 after the party’s vetting process reduced the field to 34 candidates. One aspirant who initially sought to enter the race withdrew before the final list was announced.

Party officials say the contest will be crucial in shaping the NPP’s organisational structure in the Ashanti Region, widely regarded as the party’s electoral stronghold.

Speaking after the vetting exercise, Regional Elections Committee Chairperson Rita Talata Asobayire said arrangements had been made to ensure a credible and transparent election. She also appealed to candidates to conduct issue-based campaigns and avoid actions that could create divisions within the party.

Several aspirants have already signalled their intention to focus on unity and rebuilding efforts, stressing that the outcome of the election should strengthen rather than weaken the party’s regional machinery.

With campaigning expected to intensify in the coming weeks, party delegates will ultimately decide who leads the NPP in the region ahead of future political battles.
