Police arrest six suspects, recover GH¢300,000 after Bono East highway robbery

The Ghana Police Service has arrested six individuals and retrieved GH¢300,000 believed to have been stolen during a robbery incident on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway in the Bono East Region.

The Bono East Regional Police Command said officers stationed at the Portor Police Barrier received information on the night of July 19, 2026, about an ongoing robbery near the checkpoint and quickly moved to the area.

Upon arrival, police said some of the suspects escaped into a nearby bush, while one suspect, Abdul Sadat Ali, 24, who was driving a Toyota Voxy, was apprehended. During questioning, he allegedly mentioned another suspect, Samad Issahaka, 24, the driver of a Kia Rhino truck, leading to his arrest.

Police investigations revealed that the owner of the Kia Rhino, Yahaya Seidu, 35, had hired the vehicle to travel to Buipe to purchase cattle. Authorities allege that the driver, who knew his employer was carrying a large amount of cash, worked with five others to plan and execute the robbery.

According to the Police, the suspects, armed with a toy pistol, followed the Kia Rhino from Offinso in the Ashanti Region before stopping the vehicle on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway and making away with GH¢300,000.

A joint team from the Counter Terrorism Unit and local patrol officers pursued the suspects into a nearby bush, where four more individuals were arrested. They were identified as Abdul Rahman Mashud, 21; Asigri Avoka, 25; Awini Stephen, 19; and Faisal Salifu, 26.

Police said a search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of the full amount of money allegedly taken during the robbery.

The six suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations, while the Bono East Regional Police Command praised the officers involved for their swift response and professionalism. The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to fighting crime and ensuring public safety in the region.
