Ryan Gosling cast as Ghost Rider in new Marvel film set for 2028
Ryan Gosling is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Marvel Studios announcing that the Oscar-nominated actor will play Ghost Rider in a new film scheduled for release in 2028.
The surprise reveal was made during Marvel’s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased fans about Gosling’s long-rumoured MCU debut before the actor appeared on stage to loud cheers.
Speaking to fans, Gosling said the role was one he had been hoping to take on for years.
“Wow, is this really happening?”
The upcoming film will mark the third live-action Ghost Rider movie and the first to be fully integrated into the MCU. The character was previously portrayed by Nicolas Cage in 2007’s Ghost Rider and its 2011 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
Ghost Rider follows motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze, who gains supernatural powers after becoming bound to the Spirit of Vengeance, Zarathos, following a deal with the demon Mephisto.
Marvel also confirmed that Shawn Levy will direct the project. Levy, who previously helmed Deadpool & Wolverine, is currently working with Gosling on Star Wars: Starfighter.
According to Levy, conversations about Ghost Rider began while the pair were working together on set.
“As Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, we started riffing, and I finally said, ‘bro, let’s ride’, so guys, we’ll see you in 2028.”
The Ghost Rider announcement was one of several major reveals at this year’s Comic-Con. Marvel also showcased footage from the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and confirmed that Black Panther 3 is slated for release in 2028.
Elsewhere at the convention, Ryan Reynolds made a surprise appearance in character as Deadpool during an Avengers: Doomsday panel, joking with cast members including Robert Downey Jr. and Paul Rudd.
With Gosling now officially entering the MCU, Marvel fans have finally received confirmation of one of the franchise’s most anticipated castings.
