NPP’s Nana Boakye calls Sedina Tamakloe acquittal ‘well-choreographed antics’ by NDC
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has questioned the circumstances surrounding the acquittal of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, with the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, alleging that the outcome was influenced by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
His comments came shortly after the Court of Appeal overturned Tamakloe-Attionu’s conviction and 10-year prison sentence, ruling that the prosecution had failed to establish its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Speaking on JoyNews on Thursday, Nana Boakye said the judgment did not come as a surprise to him, insisting that developments leading up to the ruling had pointed to what he described as a deliberate effort to secure the former MASLOC boss’s release.
He cited the process that led to Tamakloe-Attionu’s return to Ghana from the United States and raised concerns about how the case was handled after her arrival.
The NPP official also criticised the Attorney General’s handling of the appeal, arguing that the state’s defence lacked the level of urgency and vigour expected in a case of such public significance.
According to him, the government’s posture throughout the proceedings reinforced his belief that the acquittal was the culmination of a coordinated plan rather than an unexpected legal outcome.
The Court of Appeal’s decision effectively sets aside the earlier High Court judgment that had found Tamakloe-Attionu guilty of offences linked to her tenure at the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC).
While the ruling has brought an end to her conviction and prison sentence, Nana Boakye’s remarks are likely to fuel fresh political debate over the case and the handling of corruption-related prosecutions in Ghana.
