Police deploy 400 officers for Kpampakuya Naa enskinment in Yendi

The Ghana Police Service has deployed 400 personnel to Yendi ahead of Friday’s enskinment of the Kpampakuya Naa, as authorities intensify security preparations for one of the key events in the Dagbon traditional calendar.

Deputy Northern Regional Crime Officer ASP Richard Akumey said the operation is designed to ensure a peaceful and orderly ceremony at the Gbewaa Palace, where traditional leaders, government officials and hundreds of residents are expected to gather.

According to him, officers have been strategically positioned at the palace, major access routes and key locations across the municipality to provide security before, during and after the event.

“We are expecting traditional leaders, government officials and other guests of honour,” ASP Akumey told JoyNews, adding that officers have been briefed on escort arrangements, crowd management and access control measures.

Security officials are expected to combine uniformed and plain-clothes operations, with vehicle screening and monitoring of movements around the ceremonial grounds forming part of the deployment plan.

Beyond the palace, police patrol teams have also been assigned to major roads leading into Yendi, including the Tamale-Yendi and Saboba-Yendi routes, to safeguard travellers attending the ceremony.

ASP Akumey said checkpoints and rapid response teams would remain on standby to respond to any security incident and help maintain order throughout the event.

With large crowds anticipated, specially trained public order officers have been tasked with managing movement around the venue, while barricades will be used to regulate entry and exit points.

The police officer noted that security planning for the ceremony has involved consultations with traditional authorities, youth groups and community leaders in recent days to ensure a successful event.

“All the briefings and deployments have been made to ensure everyone is safe,” he said.

Preparations are also underway at the Gbewaa Palace for the arrival of senior government officials expected to attend the climax of the funeral rites of the late Yaa Naa Abubakari II.

According to palace officials, President John Dramani Mahama, former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin and several Members of Parliament are among the dignitaries expected to be present for the occasion.
