Tipper truck crashes into River Offin, exposes safety concerns on Nyinahin-Kumasi route
A midnight crash involving a sand-loaded tipper truck brought traffic to a halt on the Nyinahin-Kumasi highway after the vehicle plunged from the River Offin bridge at Adiembra, leaving two people injured.
The accident disrupted movement along the busy transport corridor for several hours as motorists, residents and emergency personnel gathered at the scene of the crash.
According to accounts from eyewitnesses, the truck was heading towards Kumasi when it encountered an obstruction on the bridge. Pieces of lumber believed to have fallen from another vehicle reportedly narrowed the available roadway, creating a difficult passage for oncoming traffic.
In an attempt to manoeuvre around the obstruction, the driver lost control and the truck crashed off the bridge into the river below.
Although the vehicle ended up submerged in the River Offin, both occupants survived the incident. The driver and his assistant sustained injuries and were taken to the Nyinahin Government Hospital for treatment.
The crash triggered lengthy traffic delays on the route, a key link used daily by commercial transport operators and heavy-duty trucks transporting sand, timber and agricultural produce across parts of the Ashanti Region.
The incident has also renewed concerns about conditions on the bridge and the safety of the highway, with residents pointing to longstanding calls for improvements to the structure and surrounding road infrastructure.
Police and emergency responders secured the area while efforts began to assess the scene and plan the recovery of the damaged truck. Investigators are also examining the circumstances that led to the crash.
Authorities have advised motorists using the route to exercise caution, particularly during nighttime travel, as recovery operations and inspections continue.
