TikTok star Sydney Towle, who shared her cancer journey online, dies aged 26
Sydney Towle, a well-known social media influencer who openly documented her experience battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer, has died at the age of 26.
Her family announced her death on Thursday through her social media accounts, saying she died from complications linked to cholangiocarcinoma, a form of bile duct cancer that had spread to other parts of her body.
In a TikTok video, her brother Austin, alongside their mother, said Towle died peacefully after battling the disease for nearly three years.
Towle had been transferred to hospice care earlier this week. She had built a large online following, with more than one million followers on TikTok and over 200,000 on Instagram.
For nearly three years, she used her platforms to document her life as a young woman undergoing chemotherapy and coping with the physical and emotional challenges of cancer. She was living in New York City at the time of her death.
Her family said they were proud of the strength she showed throughout her illness and of her decision to share her experience with millions of people.
They added that Towle was committed to raising awareness about rare cancers and encouraging patients to advocate for themselves, pledging to continue the work she had started.
Following news of her death, thousands of followers flooded her social media pages with tributes and messages of support for her family.
In May, Towle shared videos from hospital as she received treatment for cancer-related complications. She revealed that the disease had spread to her peritoneum, the membrane lining the abdominal and pelvic cavities.
On May 19, she posted a video from hospital with her mother, explaining that her oncologist had recommended stopping cancer treatment and moving to end-of-life care. Towle said she was not ready to give up and decided to seek treatment from another specialist.
Throughout her illness, Towle continued to share moments of happiness and optimism with her followers. Her posts frequently showed her dancing, getting ready, spending time with friends and embracing everyday experiences.
She also achieved a personal dream of becoming a model, taking part in a swimsuit show organised by The Chemo Club and Post Swim during Miami Swim Week.
Towle regularly encouraged her followers to appreciate life despite its difficulties. She spoke openly about her cancer scars and a hepatic artery pump implanted in her abdomen.
In one post, she said she had begun to recognise the strength and beauty of her body, describing her scars as reminders of how far she had come and encouraging others not to give up on their dreams.
