Roads and Highways Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza
Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza has issued a strong warning to contractors working on the Tema-Aflao Highway, expressing disappointment over what he described as the project’s sluggish pace.
During a tour of ongoing infrastructure projects in the Greater Accra Region on Wednesday, the Minister said he expected to see far more progress on the 17-kilometre stretch than what was currently visible on site.
According to him, a follow-up inspection conducted four months after his previous visit revealed little change, raising concerns about whether the project was advancing at the required speed.
Agbodza questioned why a road project of relatively short distance appeared to be moving slowly, noting that the visible works were largely limited to drainage structures and preparations for traffic diversions.
He stressed that commuters along the corridor continue to endure challenges and that contractors must intensify efforts to ensure the project delivers the expected relief.
The Minister consequently directed construction firms First Sky Construction and BHM to increase activity on site and accelerate execution of the works.
Responding to the concerns, representatives of the contractor explained that the project strategy had been revised after work commenced. They said the original plan divided the highway into separate sections, but conditions on the ground required a continuous approach to road reconstruction in order to improve traffic flow and raise sections of the roadway to the required level.
The contractor further indicated that significant effort had been invested in drainage infrastructure, including the construction of box culverts and other underground structures that are essential to the project’s long-term durability but may not immediately reflect in overall progress figures.
Despite the explanation, the Minister maintained that more visible progress was needed and urged the contractors to deliver results within the agreed timelines.
The Tema-Aflao Highway project forms part of the government’s flagship road infrastructure programme aimed at improving transportation along one of Ghana’s busiest economic corridors and strengthening links between Accra and the eastern border.
