A war of words has erupted between the Ghana Gold Board and the Minority in Parliament after GoldBod Chief Executive Sammy Gyamfi rejected suggestions that officials of the institution could face severe legal consequences under a future NPP administration.
Mr Gyamfi was responding to comments by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who had warned that executives of the state gold-trading agency could one day be subjected to stringent bail conditions over what he described as massive financial losses linked to the organisation’s operations.
Addressing the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, the GoldBod CEO dismissed the remarks as political rhetoric and insisted he had no reason to fear intimidation. According to him, the institution’s work would ultimately be judged by its impact on Ghana’s economy and not by threats from political opponents.
He pointed to what he described as major gains in the gold sector, arguing that GoldBod has helped shift attention toward value addition by increasing local gold refining rather than exporting raw resources.
Mr Gyamfi also took issue with the Minority Leader’s criticism of the institution, contending that GoldBod’s achievements had not been fairly acknowledged. He maintained that the organisation was delivering results that would strengthen Ghana’s position within the global gold industry.
The exchange follows a press conference by the Minority, during which Mr Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about reported losses associated with GoldBod’s operations and suggested that officials responsible could face legal scrutiny in the future if political power changes hands.
While rejecting the allegations, Mr Gyamfi said he remained focused on the institution’s mandate and would not be distracted by what he described as attempts to politicise its work.
The latest confrontation adds to growing debate over GoldBod’s performance, transparency and financial management, issues that are increasingly becoming a battleground between the government and opposition.
