Overnight fire destroys South Odorkor eatery, firefighters prevent wider damage
A late-night fire outbreak at a popular chop bar in South Odorkor has left parts of the business damaged, although a swift response by firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby sections of the property.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at a residential compound near New Generation Chapel, prompting an emergency response from personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service stationed at Dansoman.
By the time firefighters arrived, the eatery was already engulfed in flames. Crews immediately began firefighting operations and managed to contain the blaze before it could extend to adjoining structures within the compound.
The operation lasted a little over an hour, with firefighters first bringing the fire under control before completely extinguishing it and securing the scene.
Several items used in the operation of the chop bar were affected. Among the damaged property were gas cylinders, a refrigerator and electricity meters. The extent of the financial loss has not yet been determined.
Despite the destruction, no injuries or fatalities were reported, a development authorities say was largely due to the timely intervention of emergency responders.
The Ghana National Fire Service has since begun investigations to establish what triggered the fire.
The incident adds to a series of commercial fire outbreaks recorded in parts of the capital this year, reinforcing concerns about fire safety in food vending and other small-scale business operations.
Officials have urged business owners and residents to pay close attention to fire prevention measures, particularly when handling cooking gas and electrical installations, as investigations into the South Odorkor incident continue.
