We will vet Ayariga and Zanetor but not Supreme Court nominees: Afenyo-Markin
The Minority in Parliament says it will participate in the vetting of the two ministerial nominees but will not take part in the vetting of the three Supreme Court nominees.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin disclosed this on Wednesday, August 27, 2026, ahead of the Appointments Committee’s sitting.
“We will vet the two ministerial nominees, but we will not accept the three supreme Court nominees” he added.
The two ministerial nominees are Mahama Ayariga, nominated as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, nominated as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.
The Supreme Court nominees are Justice Sophia Bernasko-Essah; Justice Edward Amoako Asante, former President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice; and private legal practitioner and former Ghana Bar Association President, Anthony Forson Jnr.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has previously accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of hypocrisy over the nominations, arguing that the party criticised the Akufo-Addo administration for “packing the court” while in opposition.
“In opposition, they criticised the Akufo-Addo administration for packing the court,” he said in a Joy FM interview in July.
He also pointed to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) previous criticism of the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and the rejection of Supreme Court nominees under the previous administration, questioning why the party now seeks to increase the size of the apex court.
The Appointments Committee is currently vetting the nominees despite the Minority’s decision to boycott the process for the Supreme Court nominees.
