Court remands two over alleged possession of narcotics

The Accra Circuit Court Nine has remanded two men over the alleged possession of 500 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Torsu Assidam and Kofi Kesse were not required to enter pleas and have been ordered to reappear before the court on October 14, 2026. Their alleged accomplice, identified only as Amando, remains at large.

Chief Inspector Clement Sarpong, who is prosecuting the case, told the court, presided over by Joseph Yennuban Kunsong, that police received information on August 23 about a group of young men allegedly selling a substance suspected to be Indian hemp to residents around the Arts Centre.

Following the tip-off, officers from the Accra Regional Stopper ‘2’ were deployed to the area. The two accused were arrested and taken to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further questioning.

According to the prosecution, the men were found carrying 500 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. The items were seized and retained as exhibits for investigations.

Chief Inspector Sarpong said the accused admitted during preliminary questioning that the seized substances belonged to them.

The prosecution further told the court that the two men claimed Amando had supplied the items to them for sale but were unable to assist police in locating him.

The accused allegedly repeated their admission during subsequent investigations and were later brought before the court.

The prosecution said the suspected Indian hemp has since been sent to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for testing and an official report.

Meanwhile, police efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest Amando to support the investigation and prosecution of the case.
