IGP deploys reinforcement team to contain violence in New Winneba shooting incident
The Ghana Police Service says it has brought a violent incident in New Winneba under control after an estimated 300-member mob attacked the township, leaving at least three people dead and about 15 others injured.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when the group, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, entered New Winneba Township.
Police said the attackers were armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks and targeted residents, shops and properties belonging to people from the area.
Several people sustained injuries during the attacks, with about 15 victims taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment. A police officer was also injured in the violence.
The Police confirmed that three people had died in connection with the incident.
Personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols have been deployed to the affected communities to restore and maintain peace.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has also directed the deployment of additional personnel from the National Police Headquarters to reinforce security operations.
The reinforcement includes two armoured vehicles sent to the area to strengthen security and protect residents and property.
According to the Police Service, the situation is currently under control, with security personnel maintaining a presence in the affected areas to prevent further violence.
The Police have assured the public that additional information will be released as investigations and security operations continue.
