Okyere Baafi challenges Sam George over MTN mast claim
New Juaben South MP Michael Okyere Baafi has challenged Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Samuel Nartey George to publish a letter the minister allegedly claimed was written by the MP’s office requesting that MTN install a telecommunications mast at the Koforidua Kumasi Station.
Okyere Baafi accused the minister of making false claims intended to damage his standing with constituents. “A whole minister of state is lying about me for my constituents to have issues with me,” the MP said, insisting that he did not write any such letter and demanding proof from the minister.x
The dispute follows Sam George’s tour of telecommunications and Rural Telephony Project sites in the Eastern Region, including an ongoing cell-site project at the Koforidua lorry terminal. The Communications Minister has announced plans to upgrade all Rural Telephony Project sites nationwide to at least 4G and has said government aims to make calls and data services on rural networks more affordable by the end of the first quarter of 2027.myjoyonline+1
Neither the ministry nor MTN had publicly released the disputed letter at the time of reporting. The exchange has therefore become a political row over responsibility for the delayed connectivity project at the Koforidua terminal.
