GWL begins controlled spillage from Weija Dam, urges evacuation
Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has begun controlled spillage from the Weija Dam as water levels continue to rise towards the dam’s 46-foot threshold following heavy rainfall upstream.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the company said the water level had reached 45.2 feet, with rainfall persisting across the Densu River catchment and its tributaries.
GWL explained that the controlled release was necessary as a precaution to safeguard the dam and regulate the increasing water levels.
The company has therefore advised residents in communities downstream of the dam to evacuate immediately to reduce the risk of flooding and other hazards that may result from the spillage.
Residents have also been urged to stay alert, follow official evacuation instructions and refrain from activities that could put their lives and property at risk.
GWL has further appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), district assemblies, traditional leaders, assembly members, residents’ associations and other relevant stakeholders to activate precautionary measures and make preparations for possible evacuations.
Communities identified as being at potential risk include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, along with neighbouring areas.
GWL said it was closely monitoring developments and would continue to provide updates as the situation changes.
