Iñaki Williams retires from international football after four years with Ghana
Ghana will have to plan for life without Inaki Williams after the Athletic Club attacker announced his retirement from international football, ending a four-year association with the Black Stars.
The decision closes a chapter that began with high expectations when the Bilbao-born forward chose to represent Ghana in 2022. Although he never became a prolific scorer for the national team, Williams remained a consistent presence in the squad and featured at two FIFA World Cups.
His departure leaves the Black Stars without one of the most recognisable figures of the generation that helped secure qualification to the 2026 World Cup.
Williams made 28 appearances for Ghana and scored twice, but some of his most notable contributions came beyond the scoresheet. His last-gasp winner against Madagascar during the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign remains one of the defining moments of his time with the national team.
Before joining Ghana, Williams had briefly represented Spain at senior level. He later opted to switch allegiance and was handed his Black Stars debut in a pre-World Cup friendly against Brazil in September 2022.
He went on to feature in every group-stage match at the Qatar World Cup before returning to the global stage four years later, making further appearances at the 2026 tournament in North America.
Williams also represented Ghana at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, becoming a regular selection for successive national team coaches following his switch.
His retirement brings an end to a journey that connected one of La Liga’s most established forwards with his family’s homeland and saw him wear the Black Stars shirt on some of football’s biggest stages.
