Three suspected members of a robbery gang believed to be responsible for a series of attacks on motorbike riders and mobile money vendors across parts of the Upper East Region have died following an exchange of gunfire with the Police in the Tilly Forest.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, September 19, the Upper East Regional Police Command said the gang had been operating in Benaba, Binduri, Pusiga, Garu, Zebilla and neighbouring communities.
The incident occurred during a police operation in which investigators, accompanied by suspects already in custody, visited a location in the Tilly Forest where the gang had allegedly hidden firearms.

According to the Police, the team came under gunfire upon reaching the location, leaving three suspects injured. They were identified as 33-year-old Amadu Apiiga, Philip Vokbilla and Bilal Adabode, also known as Sulley, who had reportedly led investigators to the site.
The injured suspects were rushed to hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.
The Command said other individuals believed to have sustained gunshot wounds escaped from the scene, while two police officers were also injured and are receiving medical treatment.
Several weapons and other items suspected to be connected to the gang’s activities were recovered during the operation.

The items included two locally manufactured single-barrel guns, two pistols, one of which was a BRUNI 92, 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 18 live BB cartridges and three sharp cutlasses.
Police also retrieved four unregistered Yamaha Aerox scooters, a pair of black boots, a motorbike number plate and two mobile phones.
The Regional Police Command further linked the gang to the killing of a police officer during a robbery incident in Zebilla on February 8, 2026.
Six other suspected members of the group, who were arrested earlier, remain in custody and are assisting with investigations.
Meanwhile, the Police said efforts were underway to identify and apprehend other members of the gang who remain at large. Investigators are also working to establish the source of the weapons recovered during the operations.

The Command has appealed to the public to report anyone suspected of having gunshot wounds to the nearest police station, following reports that some individuals injured during the exchange of fire fled the scene.
It said information from the public would support efforts to locate the remaining suspects and advance investigations into the series of robbery attacks.
