Agbogbloshie market project put on hold after traders raise concerns
Plans to redevelop the Agbogbloshie market under the government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative have been temporarily halted following objections from traders who say they were not consulted on the project.
The decision was announced after government officials met leaders of the Kokomba Yam Market to discuss concerns over proposals that could require the demolition of existing structures.
Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga said the suspension would create room for broader discussions involving the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, market leaders and other stakeholders before any final decision is taken.
According to him, the government wants to ensure that any redevelopment plan takes into account the interests of current traders and reflects conditions on the ground.
The engagement followed resistance from market operators, who argued that the proposed project was introduced without adequate consultation.
Officials say the 24-Hour Economy Market programme is aimed at upgrading and modernising market infrastructure, with further consultations expected before work on the Agbogbloshie project resumes.
