Ghana Jollof: Appiagyei seeks First Lady, Veep’s intervention over detained nurse
Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei has called on First Lady Lordina Mahama and Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to intervene in the continued detention of senior nursing officer Salomey Awity Baffoe in the Ghana Jollof case.
Ms Baffoe, a mother of three, was denied bail by the High Court in Accra on Thursday, September 24, after being charged with abetment of crime, specifically the publication of false news, in connection with investigations into the Ghana Jollof TikTok account.
The court reportedly cited the cyber-related nature of the case and concerns that granting her bail could interfere with ongoing investigations.
The Police allege that Ms Baffoe assisted Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, identified as the operator of the Ghana Jollof account, in circulating videos and recruiting others to redistribute the content. Investigators also claim to have uncovered financial transactions between the two women.
Reacting to the court proceedings, Mrs Appiagyei appealed to the First Lady and the Vice President to intervene, expressing concern about the impact of Ms Baffoe’s continued detention on her children.
“It’s rather unfortunate as we speak now we are using women against other women. I would like to make a passionate appeal to our First Lady and our Vice President that what is happening is very disturbing, especially in Ghana where most of the women are single mothers,” she told Joy News.
Mrs Appiagyei further stressed that Ms Baffoe’s circumstances were particularly worrying because she is solely responsible for providing for her children and ensuring they receive an education.
“This is a pretty serious occasion of a woman who is single-handedly taking care of the children and she has to see to it that her children attends school,” she said.
