The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has taken delivery of 950,000 barrels of crude oil from Ghana’s Sankofa-Gye Nyame field through a collaboration with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), marking the first time the refinery is processing crude from the field.
The shipment, supplied through GNPC and transported by Sonangol Cazenga, will be refined at TOR to produce petroleum products for the local market.
The development is expected to strengthen Ghana’s domestic refining capacity while increasing the use of locally produced crude to meet the country’s fuel requirements. Sankofa crude is typically transported in cargoes of about 950,000 barrels.
TOR said the delivery demonstrates the potential for closer cooperation between Ghana’s upstream and downstream petroleum sectors by directing locally produced crude towards domestic refining.
According to the refinery’s Managing Director, the partnership with GNPC presents an opportunity to improve TOR’s operations and ensure that a greater share of the value generated from Ghana’s petroleum resources remains in the country.
He described the arrival of the Sankofa crude as a significant milestone for TOR, expressing confidence that it would contribute to building a stronger, more resilient and sustainable petroleum industry.
The shipment comes as TOR continues efforts to restore full-scale operations following extensive turnaround maintenance. In his 2026 State of the Nation Address, President John Dramani Mahama announced that the refinery had resumed crude processing for the first time since 2018.
TOR said the partnership with GNPC also aligns with efforts to deepen integration across the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors of Ghana’s petroleum industry.
The refinery added that TOR and GNPC are expected to explore further opportunities for collaboration in the future.
The Managing Director of TOR also expressed appreciation to President Mahama and Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor for their support, while commending GNPC’s management and the refinery’s tolling partners, Fujairah and Triangle Commodities Trading, for their continued cooperation.
