The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed the departure of Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars.
The decision follows discussions between the GFA and the Portuguese coach after Ghana’s opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Both sides agreed to end their working relationship by mutual consent.
Queiroz’s tenure ended after Ghana suffered consecutive defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and Gambia in the qualifiers, results that left the Black Stars at the bottom of their group.
The GFA officially announced his departure on Thursday, October 1, with Queiroz also issuing a statement confirming the termination of his contract.
Queiroz said the decision was reached following discussions conducted in a spirit of mutual respect, with both parties agreeing that ending the partnership was the appropriate step under the circumstances.
He described his time with Ghana as an honour and expressed gratitude to the GFA, particularly its president, for giving him the opportunity to lead the national team.
Queiroz said he joined the Black Stars with the aim of helping build a stronger future for the team and contributing to the development of Ghanaian football talent. However, he acknowledged that the conditions required to achieve those objectives were not fully in place, while the team’s recent results also contributed to the decision.
The Portuguese coach said he was leaving with respect, gratitude and pride, while thanking his technical team and everyone who supported their work, including during preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
He also paid tribute to the Black Stars players, praising their courage, commitment and pride in representing Ghana.
Queiroz urged Ghanaians to continue supporting and protecting the players, saying the team possesses considerable talent and potential.
He expressed confidence that, with unity, support and the right environment, the current generation of players could achieve significant success for Ghana.
Queiroz also thanked Ghanaian fans for their passion, support and hospitality, saying he would continue to hold the country in high regard.
He concluded by emphasising that Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football remained the priority, signing off with the message: “To the Future.”
