At least 51,000 teachers affiliated with the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) are expected to receive their salary arrears today, Friday, October 16, following an assurance from the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) that the outstanding payments will be settled.
The anticipated payments come after weeks of industrial action by pre-tertiary teacher unions over delays in paying arrears owed to members following their promotions.
PRETAG, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) began a strike on September 25, 2026, to demand the payment of the outstanding arrears and the resolution of other concerns affecting their members.
The industrial action disrupted teaching and learning in public basic and secondary schools, raising concerns about its impact on academic activities and the school calendar.
The unions argued that teachers who had been promoted were yet to receive the salary adjustments and financial benefits associated with their new ranks.
Their decision to strike was aimed at compelling the authorities to speed up the payment process and provide a definite timeline for settling the arrears.
Following engagements with the relevant authorities, the unions suspended the strike on October 9 after the Council of State intervened and the CAGD assured them that the outstanding payments would be made on October 16.
The assurance paved the way for teachers to return to the classroom while awaiting payment of the arrears.
The expected disbursement to at least 51,000 promoted teachers marks a significant step towards resolving the dispute that triggered the industrial action.
