Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that Ghana has received a $250,000 relief donation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to support victims of the June floods.
In a Facebook post on Friday, October 16, 2026, Mr Ablakwa said the funds, equivalent to approximately GH¢3 million, had been transferred directly to the accounts of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), which will oversee the distribution of assistance to affected communities.
He explained that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) had jointly selected ADRA as an independent implementing partner to manage the relief package.
According to the minister, the decision is intended to ensure that the support reaches eligible beneficiaries through a transparent and independent process, without government involvement in selecting recipients.
The announcement was made at the inauguration of Ghana’s National Consultative Committee on Regional Integration (NCCRI), which is mandated to oversee ECOWAS regional integration programmes and social interventions in the country.
Mr Ablakwa reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in managing the funds, stressing that the distribution process would be guided by integrity.
The donation is aimed at helping people affected by the June floods as authorities and relief organisations continue efforts to address the disaster’s consequences.
The June 29 floods affected more than 38,000 people across the Greater Accra Region, displaced over 7,700 households and claimed at least 15 lives. The disaster renewed concerns about Accra’s persistent flooding challenges and intensified calls for stronger flood prevention measures and improved urban planning.
